Pre-professional career

  • In high school, lettered in baseball, football, and gymnastics.
  • Played Little League and Babe Ruth ball.
  • Helped lead Twin Cities Sports of Eau Claire to Wisconsin Baseball Association Class A championship; went 10-20 with 3 home runs and 16 RBIs in four games in the state tournament; named the tournament MVP.

Achievements

  • Led 1965 Appalachian League in home runs (20); second in total bases (148) and was co-winner of the league's Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Lacked one plate appearance to qualify for batting championship.
