  • Played baseball, basketball, and football in high school, led his school to Greater Newark area championship in 1959.

  • In high school, posted batting averages of .567, .370, and .480.
  • Was beaned in his first professional at-bat and spent a week in the hospital.
  • Led 1963 Midwest League catchers in double plays (13).

  • Served in the U. S. Army for six months under the Reserve Training Plan.
  • In off-seasons in the early 60s, he was a truck driver for a parcel delivery service.
