• In high school, earned three letters each in baseball, basketball, and football.
• Was named all-Washington and Topps High School All-District Eight baseball teams in his senior year.
• Quarterbacked Wenatchee High to state football championship, named to All-Washington and All-American football teams.
• Played Little League, Babe Ruth League, and American Legion baseball.
• Turned down an athletic scholarship to University of Notre Dame to sign with the Phillies.

• Named to 1972 Appalachian League All-Star team.
• Named to 1973 Western Carolinas League All-Star team.
