- Graduated from Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1956.
- Played baseball and football in high school.
- Won 12 games and lost only 1 game in his final two years in high school and helped his team win two state championships.
- Played American Legion ball for Postal Employees Post #216 of Cincinnati.
- Helped pitch his American Legion team to the National Championship in 1955.
- Won 24 games and lost 2 games, struck out 149 in 122 innings pitched, had a 1.68 earned run average in American Legion competition.

- Was on the Disabled List most of the 1958 season due to arm trouble.
