- Played Little League, Pony League, and American Legion ball.
- Played baseball, basketball and football in high school.
- Was All-Indiana and All-American in high school football.
- Helped lead Funkouser Legion team of Evansville to Indiana state championships in 1966-67.
- Played for Falmouth in the Cape Cod League in 1969 and 1970.
- Graduated from Purdue with a B.S. in Industrial Economics.
- Led 1971 Big Ten in batting (.467) and RBI (19) while setting a conference record for most total bases (54).
- Was named to first team All-Big Ten and NCAA All-District Four and Honorable Mention on Sporting News' College All-America team.
