• Graduated from Denby High School in Detroit 1952.
• Played baseball and basketball in high school.
• Pitching a two-hit game in Briggs Stadium to give Denby High School the city title was his biggest thrill in prep competition.

• Pitching a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts against the league champions (Fargo-Moorhead) in the 1953 Northern League was his best pro game..
• Led the 1953 Northern League in wild pitches with 24, making 11 in one game.

• Was signed to his first contract by Tony Lucadello of the Chicago Cubs.
