  • Resided in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1952.
  • Got his nickname "Tookie" when youngsters and his brothers let him take batting practice with them; they would call him "Rookie" but Harold pronounced it "Tookie".

  • Was named to the 1949 Southern Association All Star team while playing for Nashville.
  • Led the 1951 American Association in home runs with 29.

[edit] Contract signing

  • Was signed by Mel Ott, manager of the 1952 Oakland Oaks, in 1946 for $50,000; at that time Mel Ott was a New York Giants scout.
  • Numerous clubs were after Tookie so his father, Lary Gilbert, Sr., co-owner of the Nashville team in the Southern Association, put the names in a hat and pulled out Ott's.
