- Resided in Vancouver, Washington in 1952 and 1953.
- Self-identified as being of German ancestry.
- Listed hobby as sports.
- Striking out a pinch hitter that had just come down from one of the higher classification clubs in a close game was his greatest thrill.

- Attended high school in Vancouver, Washington.
- Played baseball, basketball and football in high school.
- Attended Clark Junior College.
- Was named outstanding athlete at Clark Junior College.
- Attended Portland University and was finishing his last year in 1951.
- Played semi-pro ball but no Legion ball.

- During World War II he was a radarman with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific participating in nine major battles.
