[edit] Pre-professional career

  • Played baseball and basketball in high school.
  • Played baseball at the University of Albuquerque where in 1968, he stole 54 bases.
  • In 1969, he batted .384 and stole 53 bases and was named second baseman on All-NAIA District Seven and NAIA All-American first teams.
  • Played on the US team at the Pan-American Games in Mexico.
