[edit] Pre-professional career
- Played baseball and basketball in high school.
- Played baseball at the University of Albuquerque where in 1968, he stole 54 bases.
- In 1969, he batted .384 and stole 53 bases and was named second baseman on All-NAIA District Seven and NAIA All-American first teams.
- Played on the US team at the Pan-American Games in Mexico.

- Was third in stolen bases in the 1970 California League and fourth in 1971 California League.
