• Played baseball and basketball at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon, achieving all-city honors in both sports.
• Earned a B.S. at University of Oregon, where he played on the Pacific Coast Conference champions in two seasons.

• Homered in his first professional at bat
• Led the 1940 Western International League in RBI with 150.
• Led the 1949 California League in hits with 196 and doubles with 39.
• As of 1951, held the following California League records:
  • Most total bases, season (298 in 1949)
  • Most RBI, game (10 in 1949)
  • Most doubles, game (co-holder with 3)
  • Highest fielding percentage at first base (co-holder with .990 in 1949)
