The Hawaiian Gazette, July 3, 1872, under the headline "Base Ball" reports that "this afternoon" a team of the young gentlemen of this city [Honolulu] calling themselves the "Fourth of July" club, will play the U.S. Base Ball Club, comprised of officers of the USS St. Mary and Narragansett.
