"The championship match played on Johnson's Island, August 1, 1864 is the earliest match game, yet discovered, of baseball played in Ohio. This is not to say that baseball had not been previously played in the state or that there were not baseball clubs in Ohio, There were, in fact, clubs, but their activity was limited to intra-club play or play within a club. Their was a club in Sandusky and another nearby in Toledo in 1860."
