The Newburghs were organized "as early as 1856," and had "as particular rivals the Highlands, of [nearby] New Windsor." It seems likely that such games were played shortly after 1856, but a local source lists the first recorded game in June 1859, when a second Newburgh club, the Hudson Rivers, played its first game against the Highlands.
