A Great Game of Base Ball The Athletic club of San Francisco, came up as far as Reno on the same train that we did to go to Salt Lake to play a challenge game of base ball with the Deseret club. Both of these clubs have a high repute, and the Athletics have never been beaten. They were to play three games, and the first game came off last Saturday and the Tribune says, witnessed by the largest crowd that ever assembled on Washington square. The Athletics were successful, but not much to brag of:

Following is the scoring by innings:
           1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Athletics---4 2 1 0 5 1 0 0 0 Deserets----0 1 1 1 0 0 0 6 3 Time of game, 2 hours and 20 minutes. Umpire, Mr. McIntosh, Salt Lake.

Historical Note: Washington Square in in the center of Salt Lake City, and was the site of the 1847 Mormon Encampment. Deseret was the original name of the settlement, and comes from the word for bee in the Book of Mormon. Bees was also the name of the SLC PCL club of the late Teens and early 1920s.
