The New Orleans Times, December 27, 1867 mentions the Capitol and Red Stick Base Ball Clubs of Baton Rouge. "Red stick" is an anglicization of "Baton Rouge." According to Michael And Janice Bielawa, "Baseball in Baton Rouge," the Red Sticks and Capitols played Wednesdays and Fridays at the Garrison Grounds by the Mississippi River. and on Sunday at Magruder's Collegiate Institute on Government Street. Baton Rouge (pop. about 230,000) is about 75 miles NW of New Orleans.
