The Honolulu Pacific Commercial Advertiser, Aug. 17, 1867: "The Base Ball Clubs. There appears to be a controversy between the two Base Ball Clubs of Honolulu--the "Pioneer" and the "Pacific"." See also same, Aug. 10, 1867.
Wikipedia: "In 1845 . . . Honolulu became the center of commerce in the islands, with descendants of American missionaries establishing major businesses . . . ." Honolulu's pop. in 1890 was about 23,000.
