“The Wilson and Rocky Mount colored baseball clubs played a match game at this place [Rocky Mount] on the 4th instant. Wilson came off victorious.” Tarboro Southerner, July 10, 1879.

Rocky Mount NC (current pop. about 57,000, 55% of it African-American) is about 50 miles E of Raleigh NC. Wilson NC (current pop. about 50,000, 48% African-American) is about 45 miles E of Raleigh and about 20 miles S of Rocky Mount NC.
