The New Orleans Times Picayune, July 11, 1869, under the headline “Letter from Sewanee Plateau,” reports that “the students [of the University of the South at Sewanee] are divided into several clubs and nines, and have their baseball matches and other games…”

Sewanee TN (current pop. about 2400) is about 40 miles NW of Chattanooga. It is the home of the University of the South.
