- Played Little League and Babe Ruth League ball.
- Earned a total of 12 letters in baseball, basketball, and football in high school.
- Pitched six no-hitters in high school, including three in a row against Matawan HS while they were Central New Jersey champions.
- Named to All-Conference and All-state baseball teams.
- Led football team in rushing and basketball team in rebounds.
- Played semi-pro baseball for Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and Freehold, New Jersey.
- Set Jersey Shore League record of 22 strikeouts in a nine-inning game.

- Was fourth in ERA in the 1967 Gulf Coast League.
- Tied for lead in shutouts (4) in the 1969 Midwest League.
