- Played Little League, Pony League, Colt League, and American Legion ball.
- Lettered in baseball and basketball in high school.
- Played varsity baseball and basketball at Indiana State University.
- Led Indiana State University in hitting his junior and senior seasons.
- As a senior, batted .413 overall, .439 in conference games and was named the all-conference shortstop and team MVP.
- Graduated from Indiana State with a B.S. degree.
