"Long before it was a Soviet republic, Lithuania was a baseball-playing nation. The sport was first introduced to the country in 1922 by Steponas Darius, a Lithuanian who grew up in Chicago. In 1920 Darius [by then a World War I vet and former University of Chicago student] returned to the newly-independent Lithuania . . . . Among the games he introduced, basketball enjoyed the greatest success." But in 1922 he also launched a baseball league.
