The Boston Post Sept. 19, 1867 mentions the Hawkswood BBC of Newburyport playing the Ironclads of West Newbury for the championship of Essex County. The game was played at the Sept. 18th annual Salisbury Beach outing of Essex County citizens. The Hawkswood won, 27-22 in a nine inning game.
Newburyport MA (1860 pop. about 13,000 -- the 71st largest US city then) is about 35 miles NE of Boston.
