The Augusta Chronicle, March 23, 1877, finds that “Base Ball is the great popular amusement of Ninety Six this season.”
Ninety Six, SC (current pop. about 2,000) is about 60 miles S of Greenville SC, about 60 miles E of Columbia SC, and 60 miles N of Augusta GA.
No one seems to be at all sure where the name "Ninety Six" came from. Sorry.
